Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Joining my research group as an MS or PhD student.

Not currently a Stanford student. If you not currently a Stanford student, please apply through the department's normal application process. See this page for details. Unfortunately I receive a lot of emails from prospective applicants, and am unable to respond individual emails asking about the application process, asking for advice on applying, or asking me to estimate what are your odds of being admitted. After you are admitted, I'd be very happy to explore the possibility of working together.

Currently a Stanford student. If you are an undergrad or MS student interested in working with me, please email your resume to ml-appy(at)cs.stanford.edu. This goes directly to me and to several senior PhD students; we'd be glad to look around and see if there's a project that's a good match. If you are a PhD student interested in working with me, please feel free to contact me directly.

Looking for an internship. I am not currently able to accept any interns who are not already Stanford students. If you are a Stanford undergrad and interested in an internship, please apply through the CURIS program. I would encourage you to get involved in research even well before summer though; to try to do so, please email your resume to ml-apply(at)cs.stanford.edu.

Looking for a post doc/volunteer/other position. My research group is focusing only on Deep Learning and Unsupervised Feature Learning (including applications, such to as computer vision). If you are position, please email your resume to ml-appy(at)cs.stanford.edu. IF you currently live in the SF Bay Area and have at least 20 hours/week to volunteer for a project, feel free also to email this address. I do not have any openings currently in reinforcement learning, robotics, or any other topic of machine learning other than Deep Learning and Unsupervised Feature Learning.

Joining my research group.

If you are already an admitted or current student interested in getting involved in AI or machine learning research, please feel free to get in touch. So that I can get to know you better, please sending a copy of your resume to ml-apply(at)cs.stanford.edu. This goes directly to me and to a few senior PhD students working with me, and we'll be glad to look around and see if there's a project that's a good match.

I'm an individual looking for help with a machine learning project.

Unfortunately I get many emails from people wanting help with machine learning projects. Machine learning is having significant social and economic impact on our society, and I'm excited about the potential of machine learning, but given the volume of emails I receive I am unfortunately unable to help everyone that emails, and thus am generally unable to respond to such emails. To learn more about machine learning, please consider taking the free online machine learning class instead, at ml-class.org.

I represent a company, and am looking for help with a machine learning project.

If your organization is interested in trying to identify possible collaborations in which you might support one or two Stanford students to do research work on topics of mutual interest (depending on the details, it costs about $80-$200K/year to support a project of this size), then I'd be happy to talk. Otherwise unfortunately I am already involved in too many projects, and regret that I am unable to help you.
