Title: The MOOC revolution: Status and next steps Andrew Ng Chairman and Co-Founder, Coursera Abstract: In 2011, Ng offered a free online course on machine learning to over 100,000 learners around the world. This helped launch the modern Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) movement, and also led to the founding of Coursera, which partners with top universities to offer online courses. MOOCs offer a real course experience to learners, including video lectures, homeworks which are graded either automatically or by peers, and the opportunity to interact with a global community of learners. Learners which complete a course can also earn credentials, which are increasingly accepted by employers worldwide. In this talk, I'll report on the progress that the MOOC movement has made over the past 3 years. I will also describe some of the surprising lessons we have learned from the our learning data. Finally, I will describe emerging trends relating to MOOC pedagogy, on-demand context and to credentials earned through MOOCs. Bio: Andrew Ng is Chairman and Co-founder of Coursera, Chief Scientist of Baidu, and a Computer Science faculty member at Stanford. In 2011, he led the development of Stanford University's main MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) platform, and also taught an online Machine Learning class that was offered to over 100,000 students, leading to the founding of Coursera. Ng's goal is to give everyone in the world access to a high quality education, for free. Today, Coursera partners with top universities to offer high quality, free online courses. With over 100 partners, over 700 courses, and 9 million learners, Coursera is the largest MOOC platform in the world. Recent awards include being named to the Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world; to the CNN 10: Thinkers list; Fortune 40 under 40; and being named by Business Insider as one of the top 10 professors across Stanford University. Outside online education, Ng's research work is in machine learning, with an emphasis on deep learning. Picture (if needed): http://www.cs.stanford.edu/people/ang/media/AndrewNg-Headshot.png
