In the Bale mountains.

For some reason, many men carry spears.
Could it be that the Bale mountains still host a few
Abyssinian lions?

In a small market below the Harenna escarpment, which marks the limit between the Bale mountains and the lower Harenna
forest.

On the shore of lake Awasa.

In the Merkato of Addis Ababa.
The Merkato is
both a market (the largest in Ethiopia) and a recycling center.
In Tigray.
Priests.
People encountered while trekking from Korem
to Tenta.
Gebru (left) and Gebrehiwet
(right), two Tigrayan friends who join me on most of
my treks in Ethiopia.
People looking at my camp.

Markets in the countryside are often
vibrant, fascinating places. They play crucial role in the life of the
Ethiopian villagers.

Restaurant on the side of a market.
Women and children on the rim of the Magdala amba (flat-top mountain) near Tenta.

In Bati, on camel market day, where Afars
(Danakils), Oromos and Amharas meet and exchange.
People spend hours watching camels
before deciding to buy (or not to buy) them.

In a small restaurant in the market.

Drinking tea
under a blue tent.
In Gambela, along the Baro River at
sunset.
