The
Bale Mountains are home of rare wildlife. Unfortunately, I am not very
optimistic for the future of this wildlife as large flocks of cows, sheep, and
goats graze the same land, including within the boundary of the Bale Mountains
National Park. Nevertheless, on each trekking day we saw some of this wildlife.
Perhaps
the most famous animal in the Bale Mountains is the Ethiopian wolf, the world
rarest canid. There only exist about 450 Ethiopian wolfs, most of them in the
Bale Mountains.
In woodland areas, we
saw large numbers of noisy black-and-white Colobus monkeys, with long white
tails.
Rare bamboo-eating
Bale monkeys.
Mountain Nyalas (males have long twisted horns).
Bohor
reedbucks.
Klipspringer.
Bushpig.
Warthogs.
Birds.
