Khan As′ad Pasha, the largest former
caravanserai (khan) in the old city, constructed in 1752 under As′ad Pasha al-Azm, the Ottoman
governor of Damascus from 1743 to 1757. The square-shaped building consists of
80 rooms over two floors around a central courtyard originally surmounted by 9 (3x3)
domes. The central dome was destroyed by an earthquake and has not been
restored.
