[In Dante‛s Divine Comedy, the shades (the souls of the damned) stand at the entrance of Hell where it is inscribed ″Abandon hope, all ye who enter here″. Initially Rodin created a small version of the Three Shades that he placed on top of his Gates of Hell, so that they all point to the spectator. He later created a larger version, independent of the Gates. The photo below shows both the independent monumental version on the left and the initial version on top of the Gates.]
