Second Annual RECOMB Satelite meeting on DNA Sequencing and Characterization

Genome sequencing has been truly flourishing the past several years, with genomes such as the C.elegans, D.melanogaster, the human, mouse, and rat either complete, or currently being sequenced and assembled. Computational assembly has been an essential part of sequencing since the conception of the sequencing technology. The recent sequencing achievements have only been possible because of advances in lab techniques, in computational power, and in algorithms and software.
The purpose of this meeting is to bring together many of the people working on algorithms and systems for genome-scale sequencing and analysis.
There will be invited and contributed talks, and a round table discussion. The goal is to bring world's experts, on both biological and computational sides, for an intense two-day problem-focused meeting with an informal round-table discussion.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) computational methods for:
- BAC-based sequencing
- Whole genome shotgun sequencing and assembly
- Sequencing and assembly of difficult and repeat-rich regions
- Finishing of DNA sequencing
- Comparison and reconciliation of whole genome assemblies
- SNP detection
- Immunoprecipitation and other high-throughput techniques for isolating and sequencing regulatory sites
The confirmed speakers for this year include Sante Gnerre (Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research), Jim Mullikin (Sanger Center), Dan Rokhsar (LBL), Granger Sutton (Celera), Haixu Tang (USC), Kim Worley (Baylor), with a number of other invitations pending. Richard Myers (Stanford University) will give a distinguished genomics lecture.
This RECOMB satellite conference on DNA Sequencing and Characterization is sponsored by the Alphred P. Sloan Foundation and is the taking place for the second year in a row, with slightly changed name and with broadened scope. The first RECOMB satellite meeting on DNA Sequence Assembly took place last year in USC. RECOMB satellite meetings are focused conferences that are associated with RECOMB, and cover topics of exceptional interest. The main RECOMB meeting will take place on April 18-21 in Washington, DC.
