The aim of the School is to provide researchers in Computer Science and related fields with a broad and consistent overview of the most important recent results in the area of randomized algorithms. The Workshop will be the occasion for the presentation of new results in the same topic. The event is the second of three events supported by the EC. The first event on Approximate Solution of Hard Combinatorial Problems (ASHCOMP 96) was held in Udine, Italy, and the third one on Dynamic and On-line Algorithms for Resource Management will be held in Erice, Italy. Three forms of participation are foreseen: 1. Participation both in the School and the Workshop 2. Participation only in the School 3. Participation only in the Workshop Sponsors -------- European Commission - Training and Mobility of Researchers Programme European Commission - ESPRIT Long Term Research Project no. 20244 - ALCOM-IT. Computer Technology Institute - CTI Directors --------- Marco Protasi, Italy Paul Spirakis, Greece Part I - School (October 6-9, 1997) ----------------------------------- During the School, a state-of-the-art presentation of both basic and advanced results concerning randomized algorithms will be taking place. Some of the main topics that will be addressed are: - Randomness in algorithms - Average case analysis of algorithms - Probabilistic complexity classes - Randomized algorithms for distributed systems - Parallel randomized algorithms - Derandomization techniques List of lecturers: Bruno Contenotti, Italy Marek Karpinski, Germany Josep Diaz, Spain Alberto Marchetti-Spaccamela, Italy Philippe Flajolet, France Jose D.P. Rolim, Switzerland Alan Frieze, USA Paul Spirakis, Greece Lefteris Kirousis, Greece Part II - Workshop (October 10-11, 1997) ---------------------------------------- During the Workshop new results concerning the topic of the School will be presented. Researchers are invited to submit a paper in the Workshop (either they attend the School or not). Approximately, twenty papers will be presented. Selected papers will be invited for a special issue of a Journal. Program Committee: Josep Diaz, Lefteris Kirousis, Alberto Marchetti-Spaccamela, Grammati Pantziou, Paul Spirakis (Chair). Submissions ----------- Those who intend to submit a paper in the Workshop (both in the case that they attend the School or not), should send an extended abstract (maximum ten pages) to the following postal address: Grammati Pantziou (RALCOM 97) Computer Technology Institute, P.O. Box 1122, 26110 Patras, GREECE There is the possibility for electronic submissions by e-mail to ralcom97@cti.gr, but the organizers decline any responsibility for possible printing problems. Successful prints will be acknowledged. The deadline for submission is June 5. Communication of acceptance or rejection of the papers will be sent to authors by July 15. Registration ------------ Those who are interested in attending the event, they should fill out the following Registration Form and send it to the following postal address: Lena Gourdoupi (RALCOM 97) Computer Technology Institute, P.O. Box 1122, 26110 Patras, GREECE The School and Workshop registration fee is 250 USD (the School fee is 150 USD, and the Workshop fee is 100 USD) plus bank charges. The registration fee covers the costs of the School and Workshop printed material, coffee breaks, lunches, and School and Workshop social events. Hotel rooms will be available for 45 USD (single) and 75 USD (double). A bank check payable to "The Computer Technology Institute" should be posted together with the completed Registration Form. The deadline for registration is September 10. Grants ------ There is a limited number of grants for participants who cannot obtain funding from their institutions. They should enclose a letter of recommendation from their institution, confirming that there are no funds for supporting their participation, and a brief curriculum vitae. The grants will cover the registration fee and accommodation expenses. Those who are interested in applying for a grant should fill out the following Grant Application Form and send it to the following postal address by July 25. Applicants for grants will be informed of acceptance by September 5. Grammati Pantziou (RALCOM 97) Computer Technology Institute, P.O.
