After 390 years, Sendai now has a population of about 980,000, establishing itself as the central city of the Tohoku district (the northern part of the Honshu Island). The city continues to expand in political, economic, cultural and many other aspects. Sendai is known in Japan as the "City of Trees". It is 350 km north of Tokyo and about 2 hours away by the Tohoku Bullet Train (Tohoku Shinkansen). Sendai is a modern, safe city with a temperate climate by four distinct, beautiful seasons. Conference Site ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The conference site, Sendai Tokyu Hotel, is located in the central region of the city and is only 1.2km west of Sendai Station. It is within 20 minute walk from Sendai Station along Aobadori Avenue, which is lined with green Zelkova trees running westward from the station. The commuter buses are available from Sendai Station to Sendai Tokyu Hotel. You should get on W8-2, W8-3, or W8-4 lines at Bus Pool No. 9 and get off at Bansui So-Do bus stop: ( Sendai Station --> Aobadori Ichibancho --> Bansui So-Do ) It costs 180 Yen. The buses are extremely crowded in the morning. Transportation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Domestic flights to Sendai from Kansai, Nagoya and Fukuoka international airports are available but not from Narita. The Shinkansen (Bullet Train) connects major cities in Japan with its fast and punctual service. There is also an express night bus from Narita airport to Sendai but is limited to one departure daily. * Direct Flights to Sendai Airport Sendai Airport is directly connected by air to a few cities abroad: Seoul, Pusan, Dalian-Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Saipan and Guam. You may get to Sendai via these cities. * From Narita to Sendai The Narita International Airport (NRT) receives flights from all major airports worldwide. If you choose Narita as the gateway to Japan, you have to get to Sendai by land. There are several ways to get to Sendai depending on time and costs. -- Using JR (Japan Railway) The ``JR Narita Express'' leaves frequently from the airport to JR Tokyo station and offers ample luggage compartments. It takes approximately 60 minutes. Economical train called ``Airport Narita'' also connects between the airport and JR Tokyo station although it takes approximately 90 minutes. Once you arrive at the basement level to Tokyo station, you will need to transfer to the Tohoku Shinkansen bound for Sendai or Morioka. It takes approximately 2 hours from Tokyo to Sendai. At Tokyo station, there are numerous color coded signs in English that will help you to find your way to the Shinkansen boarding platform. Follow the green signs designated as "Tohoku-Yamagata- Akita-Joetsu Shinkansen" all the way up to the uppermost level of Tokyo station. The Shinkansen bound for Sendai and Morioka are called ``Yamabiko'' and ``Aoba'' and depart from either track 12 or 13. (``Yamabiko'' is faster.) Electronic Signs above the platforms indicate where each car will stop, so you can stand by at the correct location. The Yamagata Shinkansen bound for Yamagata is called ``Tsubasa'', the Akita Shinkansen bound for Akita is called ``Komachi'' and the Joetsu Shinkansen bound for Niigata are called ``Asahi'' and ``Toki''. The Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen are painted with the same green color used in the direction signs, so please be sure to board the correct train (``Yamabiko'' or ``Aoba''). Allow yourself at least 30 minutes to transfer to the Tohoku Shinkansen at Tokyo station if you are unfamiliar with the building. The fare for a one-way is approximately 11,600 yen (using Airport Narita and Tohoku Shinkansen) and 13,300 yen (using Narita Express and Tohoku Shinkansen). -- Using Keisei Dentetsu and JR Keisei Dentetsu also offers trains from the airport to the central region of Tokyo. ``Skyliner'' is the fast one and it terminates at Keisei-Ueno station in approximately 60 minutes, but it costs almost twice as much as the slow train that stops at every stations. The slow one takes time approximately 100 minutes to Keisei-Ueno terminal. If you arrive at Keisei-Ueno terminal, you need to walk to JR Ueno station for about 20 minutes to transfer to the Tohoku Shinkansen (that departs from Tokyo Station). The Joetsu, Yamagata and Akita Shinkansen also stop at this station, so please be sure to board the correct train (``Yamabiko'' or ``Aoba''). The total fare for a one-way is approximately 11,400 yen (using slow train) - 12,300 yen (using ``Skyliner''). -- Using an express night bus. The most inexpensive way to Sendai is using an express night bus called ``Polar Star''. It departs only once a day. Please be sure to get off the bus at Sendai-Eki-Mae bus station because Sendai is not the terminal of the bus. One-way fare for adult is 8,050 yen and round trip fare is 13,650 yen. * Via Domestic Flights An alternative method to reach Sendai is to fly directly into Kansai, Nagoya or Fukuoka international airport and transfer to a connecting flight to Sendai. Domestic flights to Sendai are in service from other airports but international flights are limited. Please check with your travel agent or carrier for further details concerning the service and frequency of connecting flights to Sendai. A shuttle bus is in service between Sendai airport and Sendai station (40 min.) on a daily basis. The bus departs from the domestic flight terminal building after the arrival of each flight. One-way fare for adults is 910 yen. * Japan Rail Pass Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) allows visitors to Japan up to three weeks unlimited travel on JR trains. The JR Pass must be purchased in advance of one's arrival in Japan. Please contact your travel agent for information on this very economical and efficient mode of transportation. (See, e.g., http://www.tokyutravel.com/j_rail.htm) Note: Credit cards are not accepted by JR companies. Please exchange funds at the airport to purchase tickets if not already holding a JR Pass. Train tickets (including Shinkansen) purchased at the station must be paid for in cash. Passport and Visa Requirements ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All overseas visitors wishing to enter Japan require a valid Passport. Visa will also be required for participants coming from the countries without visa exemption agreements with Japan. Entry into Japan for 90 days is very easy to obtain a Visa. Participants requiring visas should apply well in advance to Japanese consular offices or diplomatic missions in their countries prior to making final travel arrangements with a travel agent. For more information about visa, please see http://www.mofa.go.jp/visa (The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan) If you have any questions about entry to Japan from your country, please contact http://www.mofa.go.jp/link/mofaserv.html (Japanese Embassies and Consulates) If you require a letter advising your registration for the conference, please contact the Local Arrangements Chair. Accommodation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rooms have been block booked in the following three hotels. A light jacket may be needed in the morning and evening. Rain, if any, would rarely be heavy. Currency ~~~~~~~~ Japanese currency is Yen. There are coins for 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 Yens, and bills for 1000, 5000, and 10000 Yens. Currently (June, 1997), the exchange rate is approximately 100 Yen = US $0.83. REGISTRATION Conference fees ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The registration fee includes the proceedings, reception on October 5, banquet on October 7, refreshments and snack (but not lunch). The member rate is available to members of any of the sponsoring or cooperating organizations. The reduced author rate applies to all authors of accepted papers. The student rate applies to full time students. Those who make an early registration (before September 6) receive a slight discount. An extra banquet ticket for your companion covers the reception and banquet. An excursion ticket allows you to participate the excursion that is organized on October 9. Note that the registration fee does not include this ticket. Conference Fees (Yen) | Before Sep 6 After Sep 6 -------------------------------------------------------- Non-member | 33,000 36,000 Member/Author | 30,000 33,000 Student | 10,000 12,000 -------------------------------------------------------- Extra Banquet Ticket | 5,000 Excursion Ticket | 3,000 -------------------------------------------------------- Excursion ~~~~~~~~~ An excursion to Matsushima and Zuiganji will be organized on October 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Matsushima is known as one of the ``Three best scenic places of Japan'', where more than 260 isles are seen in the bay. Visitors can enjoy the view of uniquely shaped isles, some of which are covered with pine trees, formed as the result of erosive actions of waves and wind. We will take a ferry going across Matsushima Bay to see most of the well-known isles. Zuiganji temple, which was built in the year 828, is the most famous Zen temple in Tohoku district. Once through a large wooden gate, you can see the succession of Buddhas and caves carved into the cliff while a few minute walk to Zuiganji. The temple is constructed in the shoin-zukuri style typical of the Momoyama period (around the beginning of 17th century) and the paintings on the inside doors are done in the style of the Kano school. The woodwork in the transom areas is quite delicate. The temple has some elements of castle architecture such as uguisu (nightingale) flooring which ``chirps'' to warn of nighttime intruders, a watch tower, and secret compartments for bodyguards. One of the highlights of this excursion is Lunch. At Entsu-in, a temple near Zuiganji, we will taste shojin-ryori. Shojin-ryori is the name given to the vegetarian food eaten by Buddhist priests as part of the asceticism that they practice in their lives. This unique style of cooking, which uses no meat, fish, or eggs, can also be enjoyed by ordinary people at temples in places such as Kyoto and Kamakura.
