REGISTRATION FORM ################################### 1. GENERAL INFORMATION and PROGRAM ################################### The school is organized within the activities of the European Union project ALCOM-IT, in collaboration with the Max-Planck Institut fuer Informatik in Saarbruecken. Its scope is international and it is addressed mainly to graduate students and young researchers interested in distributed computing and its applications. Its goal is to give an overview of important recent research lines in the field, addressing both computational and applied aspects. It will also offer an opportunity to discuss ongoing research and open problems, and should help to strengthen the links and the cooperation between young researchers of the field. There is a small fee for participation, covering costs of printed material, lunches, breaks, social events. Graduate students and young researchers (up to 35 years of age) from ALCOM-IT sites can apply for an ALCOM-IT grant supporting registration and living expenses during the school. There is also limited funding for students and young researchers (of age <35) from other Institutions in the EC or EC-associated countries, to partially cover expenses during the school; those interested can apply for a grant. For more details on these, please check the "Information on Registration, Grants, Accommodation". The program will consist of five lectures (of approx. 4 hours each), namely: * Using Lock-Free and Wait-Free Shared Objects in Real-Time Systems James Anderson (University of North Carolina, USA) * Data Management in Parallel and Distributed Systems Friedhelm Meyer auf der Heide (U. Paderborn & Heinz Nixdorf Inst, Germany) * On-Line Algorithms for Mobile Computing Paul Spirakis (Computer Technology Institute and U. Patras, Greece) * Distributed Control in Artificial Intelligence Gerard Tel (Utrecht University, the Netherlands) * Security in Distributed Computing Moti Yung (CertCo/Bankers Trust E-Commerce, USA) In addition, there is time reserved for short talks by the participants. If you are interested, please send an abstract (1-2 pages) in latex or postcript to: sodics@mpi-sb.mpg.de this need not be a complete work; "half-baked" ideas and presentations of open problems, to stimulate discussion and interaction are particularly encouraged! ################################### 2. LOCATION and TRAVEL INFORMATION ################################### Saarbruecken is the capital of one of Germany's 16 states, the Saarland, with a history of more than 1000 years. The town has a cosy old center with friendly atmosphere, it is surrounded by forest and is conveniently located in the center of Europe, on the border of Germany with France (the province of Alsace), between Luxembourg, the Saar-Mosel wine valey, Frankfurt and Strasbourg. Being located on several main train and road routes, Saarbruecken is easily reachable. It also has its own international airport, but (if you need to fly at all) it may be more practical to use one of the big airports nearby -Frankfurt (the largest airport of Germany and one of the largest in Europe), Stuttgart, Paris or Luxembourg; from there you can take a train, bus or shuttle-bus. More detailed and updated travel information can be found at http://www.mpi-sb.mpg.de/~sodics/Local/travel.html The school will be held in the building of Max-Planck Institut fuer Informatik, a piece of modern architecture with excellent facilities and a nice location. Accommodation for the participants has been reserved in a couple of hotels around the old center of the town. Social events will create a friendly atmosphere for discussions and interaction in the evenings. ################################################## 3.
